Election is good news

Ephesians 1:4-10 says “even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. gdnwsIn love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

Election is good news because if I have anything to do with my salvation, I would always wonder if I’d done enough.  Or the right thing.

You see, I constantly fail at every role I’m in. That’s crushing. I’m not a good enough father, son, husband or friend. And that’s when I’m trying.

But with election, God has done it all. I’ve done nothing. Like being adopted. Not like. As  in adoption. Exactly like it. I bring nothing. I give him my best which in comparison isn’t much. He in return gives me everything. Not to complete himself. But to show how good and gracious he is. To show off his glory.

I’ve brought nothing to my salvation. Not a prayer, not “I gave my heart to Jesus”. A dead man can do nothing. You can’t make God save you. That’s just dumb.

Election is pure joy. I don’t have to wonder if I’ve done enough. I don’t have to question if I’m good enough. Jesus did it all and he is enough and my identity is in him. Nothing else. Not my works, good or bad. My redemption, forgiveness of my sin, purchased by the blood he shed on the cross. Not begrudgingly but lavished upon me I. Did. Nothing.

That is the good news of the gospel.
